Monthly Fishery Report

December 2017

Weather wise December was up and down with some very mild days, some very wet days and also some very cold days. So cold in fact that three of our lakes completely froze over! The rain was much needed and our chalk streams flow has improved and the lakes are full to the brim. As is usual at this time of year the fishing has been superb. The trout never seem to mind the colder weather and could often be tempted to chase down lures on a very quick retrieve, it’s always great fun when a bow wave of a chasing trout can be seen hunting down your fly before you get a rod wrenching smash as they hit your fly!

The stocking of Arctic Char has been very popular once again and one angler that has certainly worked out how to tempt them is fishery regular Alan Drewitt. Over three trips Alan caught 19 fish with 11 of those Arctic Char, he also had Golden Trout, Blues, Tigers and Rainbows to a top weight of 8lb! The Char were tempted on either a black and silver humungous or a yellow fritz bodied lure with an orange/peach coloured marabou tail and a tungsten head. All fish were stalked and caught on the drop with no movement imparted in the fly.

Dozens of other fish were landed by our anglers and the following is just a snap shot. Alan Mackay caught his first Tiger, David Phillips had an eight fish haul that included an Arctic Char and Tony Roll caught 7 that also included a Char. On a separate occasion Tony Roll caught another 6 fish, which was also matched by his son Mark, Joe Leach caught a cracking Brown and Nick Dennett landed his first Golden. Ian leach completed the challenge he set himself of catching a fish from each lake on a different fly, Mr Seales and Mr Warmington both caught an Arctic Char, Mr Randall also caught a Char along with Tiger Trout on one visit and a Tiger, Golden and double figure Rainbow on a separate trip and Richard Prior caught a Tiger and a Brown. Over three trips Clive Watton caught a Blue, 3 Tigers and 5 Browns to 8lb 8oz, Mr Quilliam had a four fish bag including a 4lb 8oz Char and Sam Quilliam caught a tagged fish, netting himself £100. There were some superb Blues caught with Tim Smith catching a 5lb Blue, Ted Jarvis and Bryan McIntyre landing 6lb+ Blues and Mike Holloway catching a clonker of 7lb, Tim Smith also netted a immaculate 9lb 8oz Rainbow in the same session and Vintcet Webb and David Phillips both caught Arctic Char. Aaron House had an excellent couple of visits catching three personal bests. On his first visit he caught a Rainbow of 5lb 8oz and a Brown of 5lb 14oz and on his next visit a couple of days later he beat his Brown personal best with a superb fish of 7lb 8oz. The biggest fish of the month was an immaculate 13lb 2oz Rainbow caught by Grant Harrow from Alder lake that Grant stalked for over an hour before tempting it on the ever faithful blue flash damsel. Poole and Wimborne FFC also fished with us again and all 18 members that attended caught their 3 fish limit – a few highlights were a 5lb Arctic Char to Mike Hirsh, 3 Tigers to Bradley and a 5lb Brown to Mike Slater. The beginning of December also saw us hold one of our very popular fishing competitions, turnout was excellent and dozens of fish were caught. The worthy wine was Peter Doule with an excellent 10lb 4oz Rainbow and Peter chose the Snowbee Prestige #5 fly rod as his prize.

Brighter lures such as cats whiskers, appetisers, fritz and blobs are doing particularly well but lots of fish are still getting caught on blue flash damsels. When the fish have been trickier to tempt and are shying away from lures, smaller bugs and buzzers have done well, especially ‘when all else fails’.

That’s all for this month but keep an eye on our facebook page for up to date catches and information about the Fishery.
