Monthly Fishery Report

February 2018

The sport has continued to be excellent through February with the fish being very active indeed due to lower water temperatures and high oxygen content of the lakes. On the warmer days plenty of fish could be seen in the surface layers, which enabled those that wanted to, to stalk fish, but the lower light levels and the angle of the Sun did make stalking tricky at times. Everything seems to be springing in to life and plants can be seen shooting all around the fishery, even the bluebells, and the birds are definitely more vocal.

Plenty of fish have been caught with a few doubles in the catches too! Aaron House has had a great month taking his first double of 10lb 4oz and then following it up with another Rainbow of 10lb exactly a few days later, he also caught a a couple of Tigers,  a Golden and a Char. Anthony caught 6 fish, including an Arctic Char, Alan Drewitt also had 6 fish, topped by a 6lb Blue and Ian Randall managed two Char in one trip. James Maidment had a lovely Brown, Robert Hall had his first Char of the winter, season rod Mr Skelton had a cracker of a Rainbow at 9lb 8oz and Gemma caught an Char on her first go at fly fishing! Martin French had a day to remember when he slipped his net under a 10lb Rainbow that was also tagged, winning him £100, Mr Fawcett and Mr Helliker both caught Char and Jenny and Annie had some tuition and caught 3 fish – a 4lb Rainbow to Jenny and a Golden and a superb 6lb 2oz Brown to Annie! Nick Spring bagged a Char and so did regular Jim, Robert and Darren both had Tigers, and Robert Hall had a 4 fish catch in the snow, bagging a Rainbow. Golden and two Tigers! Harry Brookwell caught a personal best 8lb 4oz Rainbow on his first visit, Don Cottle had a 7lb Rainbow, Mr Nixson caught a 10lb Rainbow, Sam Parry narrowly missed out on the biggest fish of the month with a lovely 11lb 5oz Rainbow and Jeremy caught a superb 11lb 6oz Rainbow after having some fly fishing tuition! Poole and Wimborne Fly Fishing Club visited us and they achieved a 100% catch rate with the best fish a cracking10lb 2oz Rainbow to Mike Hirsh!

Brighter lures such as cats whiskers, appetisers, fritz and blobs are doing particularly well but lots of fish are still getting caught on blue flash damsels and black and green montanas. When the fish have been trickier to tempt and are shying away from lures, smaller bugs and buzzers have done well, especially ‘when all else fails’.

That’s all for this month but keep an eye on our facebook page for up to date catches and information about the Fishery.
